William David Gressly Keynote: The Importance of Peace in Yemen

WASHINGTON, D.C., United States —

William David Gressly began his keynote address by noting that the situation in Yemen remains complicated for everyone, with women, children, and men all suffering due to the prolonged crisis. Many people do not have jobs, and the economic collapse has led to food insecurity in the country. Gressly emphasized that Yemen needs more assistance and pointed out that “peace is the only real solution to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.”

Gressly stated that until the war ends and the economy recovers, Yemen will continue to experience food insecurity, malnutrition, and loss of life. He suggested that in the short term, improving agriculture and fishing could empower the population to earn a living.

Gressly also mentioned that other economic constraints, such as restrictions on movement and importation, drive up the cost of imports and severely impact a country that imports 90% of its food. He called for currency stabilization to address this issue.

Gressly emphasized that establishing peace is not just about providing humanitarian aid, but also about economic support, which creates jobs, opportunities, and livelihoods, reduces the cost of living, increases people’s disposable income, and allows them to leave the state of insecurity they currently face.

Gressly praised the recent truce and expressed optimism about the potential for its extension, which he said could provide an opportunity to develop initiatives to address the situation and restore hope and prosperity to the people of Yemen.
